The southern, more heavily populated, sub-regions show the biggest change with annual average precipitation in Tees Valley falling by around 5.3% and over the majority of County Durham and Tyne & Wear by around 4.6%.
In the upland areas of west Northumberland changes are more significant than the lower-lying eastern areas with reductions in annual average rainfall of around -3.6% and -2.3% respectively.
