Coastal locations show a smaller increase which generally becomes less significant moving northwards. North Northumberland has the smallest increase in wind speed of only around 0.3%. Inland locations experience a greater increase in wind speed of around 1.6%. The largest increase in wind speed occurs in east County Durham (around 1.6%).
Percentage Change in Wind (Summer Average)
All areas experience a reduction in summer average wind speed.
The largest decrease in wind speed occurs along the coast, with coastal areas facing around 2% reduction in wind speeds. Further inland, in west Northumberland and west County Durham, the change in wind speed is around -0.5%.
Percentage Change in Wind (Autumn Average)
All regions experience a reduction in autumn wind speed.
The coastal locations show the greatest reduction, with wind speed in north Northumberland falling by around 2.5%. The reduction becomes less significant moving southwards down the coast. The inland areas experience a smaller reduction, within the range of around -0.8 to around -1.1%.

All areas show an increase in winter average wind speed.
The increase is greater in the south, with south County Durham and Tees Valley showing an increase of over 2%. North Northumberland has an increase of around 1.1%. The increase in wind speed is more pronounced moving inland.
