The North East region extends from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north to Teesside in the south and from the North Sea coastal margin in the east to the North Pennines in the west.
The region can conveniently be sub-divided into four sub-regions, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley. Northumberland and County Durham are principally rural areas with market towns and some small urban conurbations. Tyne & Wear and Tees Valley are major urban conurbations and heavily dominated by various commercial and industrial centres.
The region is presently split into 23 districts or boroughs. Although this is set to change with local government re-organisation, these present boundaries have been used in the study to provide a level of local detail.
We recognise that some readers of this website may require a summary of the key climate changes, impacts and adaptation approaches across the region as a whole for purposes of a high-level overview. This information can be found at the Regional scale of reporting.
Other readers may wish to focus on county-wide issues for purposes of strategic planning, for example. This information can be found at the Sub-regional scale of reporting.
For those readers requiring a more detailed level of understanding, this information can be found at the Local Detail scale of reporting.
